Smyrna Police detectives have made an arrest regarding an outstanding shooting suspect from a July incident. On July 14th, at approximately 5:30 pm SPD patrol officers responded to a motor vehicle collision in the area of Locust St and E Commerce St. Further investigation revealed that the female operator of the vehicle crashed due to being shot in the neck while operating her vehicle in the area of Locust St and E Frazier St. This female victim in her 20’s suffered serious injury from this shooting and remains paralyzed. After exhaustive investigation utilizing several measures, detectives were able to identify the shooter as Gary V Lewis, 37 of Dover, DE. SPD investigators received assistance from the US Marshals Task Force, and the Dover Police Department’s Drugs, Vice and Organized Crime Unit in locating Mr. Lewis at a family member’s residence in the 300 block of Blue Coat St, Dover. On 9/9/20, SPD detectives along with Dover PD and the US Marshal’s Task Force took Mr. Lewis into custody without incident. Mr. Lewis was charged by Smyrna PD with the following;
Assault First Degree-Intentional Serious Injury-Weapon Dangerous Instrument
Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
Possession or Control of Firearm By Person Prohibited Causes Injury or Death
Reckless Endanger First Degree Creates a Substantial Risk of Death to Another
Criminal Mischief $5000 or More Damage Property
Mr. Lewis was arraigned for these charges in JP Court #7 and received a $66,000 cash only bond. Mr. Lewis was additionally charged for new gun and drug charges by Dover PD (see their release). Mr. Lewis was lodged at the Sussex Correctional Institute pending a future court hearing.
